Drum Lessons

Individual Percussion Lessons

Drums are exciting.  But, often, private drum lessons dull that excitement by stubbornly insisting on a single path that all students must follow to see progress.  My approach is different.  I develop a unique plan for each student that takes into account their personal musical goals:  whether that is playing in a band with their friends, excelling in the school band, or making it into a High School Marching Band or Drum Corp.  All areas of percussion are taught: drum set, classical, and world. We will also augment the drum lessons with time on piano and guitar, to teach more than just the rhythmic foundation of a song. Your child will also learn how a song works from each instrument’s perspective.

How Lessons work

Most students prefer to take a ½ hour lesson each week.  I find that this works very well until a serious student is in 9th or 10th grade.  At that point, a 45 minute lesson or 1 hour weekly lesson (depending on the student’s desire) can be considered. I’ve made it my goal to always be flexible to family needs and have worked out nearly every imaginable schedule with students. I’m sure we can find something that works for your child!

Age considerations

I hold a K-12 teaching degree from Texas Tech University, and have worked with students individually as young as 5 years old.  I run a Brasilian Samba Drumline for kids as young as 8, and have taught Steel Drums to students as young as 6.  However, with students between 5 and 7, I require the parent to stay in and participate in the lessons.

The majority of students will begin learning drums between 10 and 15 years of age.  I also work with adult students, both professional and non-professional drummers in the area, as well as band directors wanting to gain a deeper knowledge of percussion, and many other specific groups of people.  I have also taught Adult classes in drum circle playing, relaxation and stress relief through drumming.

Pricing

Individual lessons cost $30 per half hour session when taken at my drum studio in Gwynn Oak, MD.  In some circumstances, I will travel to a student’s house for 1 hour lessons at the rate of $70 per hour.

Group Drumming Events

Over the past 10 years I’ve developed a fun and creative system of teaching hand drumming to groups of people.  This has become a special area of my life, and I’ve been priviledged to work with many different schools, organizations, hospitals, and businesses.

I can accommodate approximately 20-25 people per group sessions, which typically lasts about 1 1/2 hours.

During the session, we’ll play rhythm games, learn interlocking patterns, develop group creativity, and, most importantly, have a lot of fun.
